Arizona Charters Are Outperforming District Schools

Arizona charter schools are consistently outperforming district schools.
Arizona charters are statutorily mandated to improve student achievement. (A.R.S. § 15-181(A)) AIMS data is the best measurement – at this time – for charter schools to track student achievement, and the Association has analyzed charter schools’ performance based on recent Spring 2009 AIMS data released in July from the Arizona Department of Education. Charter schools are ahead of districts in percentage of schools that pass the state standardized tests.
Overall

Of the 15 schools with an average of 99% passing and above in math overall, 8 are charter schools.

Of the 9 schools with an average of 99% passing and above in reading overall, 5 are charter schools.
Reading

Of the 14 schools with 100% passing in 4th grade reading, 10 are charter schools

Of the 14 schools with 100% passing in 8th grade reading, 9 are charter schools

Average charter school passed 75% of 4th graders in reading compared to 70% in district schools.
